After 6 years of services is a second chance an option ??

Friday, May 20th was a day like the rest at SPCA Laurentides-Labelle. Employees embarked on the morning routine of caring for all the animals. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Nikie, the 6 year old German Sheppard cross was spending time with her new friend Chips, the 4 year old Labrador cross. Both dogs got along well, not surprising as the both are social with wonderful personalities. The dogs hung out with the employees during the morning feeding & cleaning.

Once noon quickly rolled around, Nikie had become a quiet, and seemingly uncomfortable. She then tried to vomit, but with each forceful try, she was not successful.

By 2:30 in the afternoon, it was noticed that Nikie, now laying quietly had started to pant heavily and she her stomach had suddenly become quite bloated. She was taken outside for some fresh air and to see if she needed to relieve herself. Becoming more uncomfortable, Nikie lay down in the grass and refused to stand back up. She was immediately driven to the local animal hospital.

Upon arriving at the Ste-Agathe Veterinary Hospital, Technicians immediately jumped into action when Nikie was brought through the door. Nikie lay quietly on the table as Technicians positioned her for x-rays. She did not move an inch when blood was taken for her general profile.

The veterinarian on staff confirmed with Nikie’s x-rays that she did indeed have a gastric torsion and there was no time to lose if the dog was to undergo emergency surgery. Within minutes the team at the hospital had put Nikie to sleep and were preparing her for a long surgery.

A team of technicians and a veterinarian worked on and cared for Nikie throughout her surgery. It was confirmed that her stomach had indeed rotated 360°. After waking up from the long surgery, she spent the night at the hospital so she could be closely monitored for the first 24 hours post operation.

SPCA Laurentides-Labelle has incurred unexpected bills related to Nikie’s surgery. Besides the surgery, there are the fees for her x-rays and blood work. The total has amounted to $1000, and we are asking for help to care pay for these bills. Have a hand in Nikie’s recovery, and when making your donation, please mention it is for The Nikie Fund. Remember that all tax receipts will be sent for donations of $20 and more.

Nikie thanks you!

What is a Gastric Torsion

Gastric Torsion: the rapid enlargement of the stomach caused by the twisting of the stomach in such a way that it is impossible for contained gases, fluid and solids to escape. Gastric Torsion may result in a stomach that is rotated by anywhere from 90° to 360°. Finally, the stomach and/or intestines may perforate, resulting in the contamination of the abdominal cavity with stomach contents and bacteria. A combination of shock, septic peritonitis (acute and painful inflammation of the membranes lining the abdominal and organ walls), together with multiple organ failures, results in death within hours of the initial signs.
