Stories with happy endings

RETURN

Hello!  My name is Nelly and I have an incredible story to tell. Last November, I was abandoned when I was less than one year old. I spent weeks roaming in the woods, getting thinner by the day.  I was cold, I was hungry and I was scared.

Then one day, people from SPCA Laurentides Labelle came towards me.  Well, with my experience with people up till then, I didn't want to have anything to do with them. For weeks they tried to tame me and feed me so I wouldn't die of starvation, but I was too scared to let them get close! I was quicker than them - until the day I hurt a paw; that changed everything! They finally caught me and took me to the SPCA Laurentides Labelle shelter.

Turns out that was my lucky day. At the SPCA LL I received good food, great care and lots of love. However, I still had problems with a rear paw that was swollen. After examining it, the veterinarian thought it wise to amputate a toe. Then I hurt myself again and the vet had to remove two more toes.  And that wasn't the end of it.  He finally had to amputate my leg. Believe me when I say the whole thing was quite an adventure!

I was adopted in March, shortly after the amputation, and now live with a lovely family in Saint-Sauveur - Nathalie, Charles, Jessica, Samuel, Frederick and our cat, Parker. I'm now playful, very active and protective towards these people who also protect me. I even inspired young Samuel to write two essays for which he got high marks! Because of my past experience, I had more trouble with Charles, the man of the house; but he was very patient and respectful with me and we're now great friends, playing hide and seek and other games. We're like two peas in a pod! I also really love swimming.  And at the end of the day, I love lying on my back, three paws in the air, getting my tummy rubbed.  What a great life!

All this is to say the donations you make to the SPCA Laurentides Labelle really go to saving lives. Most other shelters would have ended up having me euthanized; but at the SPCA LL, they understand how each animal deserves a second chance and can make a difference to a new adopting family. You see, the shelter spent about $1,500 on me and the Sainte-Agathe Veterinary Hospital was also very generous in lowering their fees so the shelter could help me.

And I'm not the only one. There was Hope, the cat who was poisoned and was found with her kittens; there was Mercure, the skinniest cat that the team ever set eyes on, but they quickly «beefed» him up with good food and loving care. This is just to mention a few of us - there are many, many more. At the SPCA LL, there is no non-essential euthanasia.

And this year, to make sure there are even more stories with happy endings, the team developed a questionnaire for prospective adopters. That way, the animals find homes that are the most suitable to each one with people who are most likely to love them and respect them. It's super!

Make a donation to the SPCA LL - all gifts are important to the shelter. For example, a donation of...

ö  $25 pays for antibiotic treatments for one animal

ö  $50 buys a case of special puppy or kitten food

ö  $100 equals the cost of hospitalization for one animal for one day, with intravenous treatment.

Thank you for your generosity!

  Nelly
