The SPCA Laurentides Labelle, a  No-Kill  adoption center

Did you know that our team chooses life by giving another well deserved chance to abandoned animals? The SPCA Laurentides-Labelle keeps dogs and cats as long as necessary, except in rare cases of fatal or incapacitating illness, or because of dangerous behavior. Our team's efforts go towards adoption, education, protection and animal rights. Our shelter offers dogs and cats a healthy environment...                 without a time limit.

Getting rid of ear mites

If you have cats at home, you might have encountered little pests called ear mites. These spider-like parasites are a common problem with cats and they can lead to serious problems if left untreated. You can suspect ear mites if your cat tends to shake her head and/or scratch her ears. There can also be redness in your cat’s ears and/or a dark substance similar to ground coffee. If you suspect your cat has ear mites, please make an appointment with your vet. The examination can confirm the presence of mites and they’ll prescribe the most appropriate treatment according to the severity of the infection. It’s very important to keep giving your pet this medicine for the entire duration of the treatment prescribed by the vet. If you have other pets in your home, you should also have them checked to prevent the spreading of ear mites since these parasites can go from one cat to another or to a dog.

Kindness to animals helps us build a better world for all of us

and kindness is when you simply reach out to any other living being outside of you.

It’s what takes us outside of ourselves and is so fundamental and basic.

You’ll find this from all of the great teachers from all time, that they’ve all told us to reach beyond ourselves and that our own happiness in fact, is not by simply looking inward towards what we need, but looking out towards what others need.

Michael Mountain, President, Best friends animal society.

New year, new laws?

Too many animals have been taken out of the hands of cruel breeders in our province last year. In light of these unfortunate incidents, the team at the SPCA LL is asking for all Quebecers’ support so that the government and municipalities in this province modify their laws and by-laws to prevent animal cruelty, all in a spirit of compassion.

“It’s more than time for a change, says Corinne Gonzalez, general manager, SPCA LL. With several recent seizures in puppy mills and the publication of television reports about them, more and more people understand the depth of the problem and are rightfully upset.”

“At this time, she says, federal and provincial laws are too soft and our province requires more inspectors and financing. Because of this, thousands of animals spend their life in small and unhealthy cages, without sunlight or adequate care.” Gonzalez thinks this situation allows puppy mill owners, pet wholesalers and people who neglect or mistreat their pets to act without consequences.

“But that’s just part of the problem, she adds. At the other end, municipalities adopt by-laws which consider pets as nuisances. This not only isn’t efficient but it also works against pet welfare and responsible guardians.”

According to her, municipalities are more and more prone to ban certain races of dogs. “Race is rarely a problem, she says. The way they’re raised usually dictates their behaviour. For instance, pit bulls can bite given certain circumstances, but so do labradors. Also, more and more municipalities limit the number of pets allowed per home without considering the way they’re treated or whether they’re kept within the limits of the property or they’re sterilized. This allows irresponsible guardians to keep just one animal and mistreat it legally while others have to hide their pets if they exceed the allowed number, even if they treat them well and that the animals do not disturb anyone. This is unacceptable.”

In this context, the SPCA Laurentides-Labelle invites all readers to write to their mayor and/or deputee to denounce this situation. Sample letters are available.

Gonzalez also invites elected officers to contact and work with animal rescue organizations to create more efficient laws and by-laws which will do more for animal protection in a spirit of compassion.

I Am an Animal Rescuer

My job is to assist God's creatures
I was born with the need to fulfill their needs
I take in new family members without plan, thought, or selection
I have bought dog food with my last dime
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid
I have fallen in love a thousand times
and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body

I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends
I don't often use the word "pet"
I notice those lost at the road side
And my heart aches
I will hand raise a field mouse
And make friends with a vulture
I know of no creature unworthy of my time

I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven
But I believe there are
Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind
We may be master of the animals,
But the animals have mastered themselves
Something people still haven't learned

War and Abuse makes me hurt for the world
But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind
We are a quiet but determined army
And making a difference ever day

There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan
nothing more rewarding than saving a life
No higher recognition than watching them thrive
There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play
who only days ago, was too weak to eat

I am an Animal Rescuer
My work is never done,
My home is never quiet
My wallet is always empty
But my heart is always full

In the game of life, we have already won
